Canobie Lake Park Day Trip: A Family Plan for Salem, NH

Ask a family in Derry or Windham what goes on the summer list, and Canobie comes up early. It is close, it is a proper amusement park, and it works for almost every age. A Canobie Lake Park day trip is easy right up until you try to fit a seven-year-old who is done by early afternoon, a fourteen-year-old who wants to stay until the lights come on, and a grandparent who would like a sit-down halfway through into the same plan.

This guide is about the logistics around the park, not the rides: getting to Salem, parking, the food and re-entry rules, and how a second car (or a bigger one) lets everyone have the day they want. We are a local rental company a few exits up I-93 in Derry, and Salem is part of our regular delivery area.

The short version: I-93 south to exit 2 or 3, then North Policy Street. Parking is free. No outside food inside, but a hand stamp gets you back in the same day. If your group will want to leave at different times, bring two cars. Need one? Book online or call (603) 661-2672.

Getting there: closer than most day trips

The park is at 85 North Policy Street in Salem. From Derry, Londonderry or Windham it’s a short run south on I-93. From Manchester it’s the same road, just a little longer. The park’s parking and transportation page gives the details, and the directions come down to this:

  • Exit 2: from I-93 southbound, bear left off the exit and turn left at the lights onto North Policy Street. The park is less than a mile from the exit.
  • Exit 3: take Route 111 east, continue straight at the lights, turn right onto Range Road, then right onto North Policy Street.
  • Type the full address. The park warns that some GPS systems send drivers to the wrong road, and searching just “Canobie Lake” can send you to a road that isn’t near the park. Use “85 North Policy Street, Salem, NH 03079”.

Parking, drop-off and accessible spaces

Good news first: parking at Canobie is free. A few details help the day run smoothly:

  • The lot opens about 30 minutes before the park opens and stays open about 30 minutes after it closes. Overnight parking isn’t allowed.
  • Drop-off and pick-up is near the Entrance Complex, which is handy if one driver is shuttling people in two trips.
  • Accessible parking is near the entrance: drive in through the main entrance and follow the blue line through the lot.
  • The park asks drivers to keep to the posted 14 mph limit in the lot and follow the signs to the active parking areas. With lots of small people on foot, slower is better anyway.

Why a Canobie Lake Park day trip works better with two cars

This is the part most families don’t plan for. Rides, heat and excitement wear out different ages at very different rates. With one car, either the little ones melt down at 3 PM or the teenagers get dragged home at 3 PM. A second car solves it: one adult takes the early crew home for a nap, and the other stays to close with the older kids.

Car options for a Canobie Lake Park day trip by type of group
Your group Car plan Why
Two parents, kids of very different ages Your car plus an economy or midsize rental Split up when the youngest are done; nobody’s day gets cut short
Grandparents hosting visiting grandkids An SUV rental Room for car seats, a stroller and a change of clothes for the water area
Two families going together One car each, or one SUV plus a sedan Everybody keeps their own schedule for the drive home
A group of 18–20 year olds One midsize sedan We rent from age 18 with no young-driver surcharge

Not sure which size fits your group? Our SUV vs sedan guide walks through it, and you can see the range on our fleet page.

Colorful teacup rides in front of an ornate carousel at an amusement park on a clear afternoon — gentler rides for younger kids on a Canobie Lake Park day trip
Teacups and a carousel for the little ones. They will be ready to go home long before the teenagers are.
“The rides are the fun part. Getting six people of six different ages home at the right time is the part a second car fixes.” — Vorenza Rental Cars, 15 Central St, Unit B, Derry, NH

Food, re-entry and the car as a home base

The park’s FAQ is clear on a few rules that shape the day:

  • No outside food or drink inside the park.
  • No grilling and no alcohol in the parking lot, and there are no picnic tables out there.
  • Re-entry with a hand stamp. Ticket stubs and receipts won’t get you back in, but the hand stamp you get on the way out allows re-entry until closing that day.
  • Lockers can be rented, though they can sell out on busy days.

That combination makes the car a useful base. Keep a change of clothes, sunscreen and towels for the water area in the trunk. If you step out for a break, keep it short and remember a closed car heats up quickly on a June afternoon: nothing perishable, and never a child or a pet left inside. In a rental, a towel over the back seat for damp kids on the way home is a good idea, and the usual rules apply: no smoking or vaping, and return the car with the same fuel level.

Weather and timing

  • Check the official calendar. The park runs a seasonal schedule, and hours change through the summer. Look up your exact date on canobie.com before you go rather than relying on last year’s pattern.
  • Showers don’t usually end the day. The park says it operates in most weather, with some rides closing temporarily. If it closes for weather, guests still inside at the adjusted closing time get a comparable ticket for another day. If you leave on your own before then, there’s no rain check.
  • Weekdays before school ends are calmer than summer Saturdays. Most New Hampshire schools finish in mid to late June, so the next couple of weeks are a good window.

Make a day of Salem

If the group splits up, the early leavers don’t have to go straight home. Salem has a few good stops within a short drive:

  • America’s Stonehenge at 105 Haverhill Road, a historic site and museum. Its website lists it as open daily, year-round.
  • Shopping along Route 28 and at Tuscan Village. New Hampshire has no general sales tax, which is why so many Massachusetts families shop here. More on that in our guide for Massachusetts residents.
  • Back up I-93 to Windham or Derry for dinner, a few minutes north, before collecting the second half of the group at closing.

For bigger days out later in the summer, our Hampton Beach day trip guide and weekend road trips from Derry are a good place to start.
