Car Rental in Portsmouth, NH: A Local Guide for Seacoast Visitors and Workers

Downtown Portsmouth is one of the few places in New Hampshire where you can park the car and forget it for a day. Market Square, the waterfront and the old brick streets are all within a short walk. But a week on the Seacoast rarely stays downtown. There is Rye and the coast road, a beach day at Hampton, a meeting at Pease, dinner in Exeter, and the drive in from wherever you landed. That is why people search for a car rental in Portsmouth, NH, and in July they often find the nearby counters sold out or unwilling to rent to anyone under 21.

We are a locally owned rental company based in Derry, about 45 minutes to an hour west of Portsmouth depending on traffic. Portsmouth sits outside our local delivery zone, but we serve it regularly. This guide explains how that works, when it makes sense, and the Seacoast driving and parking details worth knowing before you arrive.

The short version: We can deliver to Portsmouth at an out-of-area rate based on distance, or you can pick up in Derry or Manchester and drive east. Drivers 18 and up, no young-driver surcharge. Downtown, use the city garages for long stays. Call (603) 661-2672 for a delivery quote, 24/7.

Who rents a car for Portsmouth, and why

  • Summer visitors staying a week. A short-term rental near the harbor, family in Kittery or Rye, and a list of day trips. Flying into Boston Logan or Manchester-Boston Regional Airport and then needing a car for the whole stay is the usual pattern.
  • Short-term workers at Pease. The Pease International Tradeport, on the old air base west of downtown, is home to a long list of employers. Contractors and new hires on a temporary assignment often need a car for weeks rather than days.
  • Locals between cars. Your car is at the body shop and you need something by tomorrow. Our same-day car rental guide explains how it works.
  • Drivers aged 18 to 24. Most national chains won’t rent to under-21s and charge a daily fee up to 25. We rent to drivers 18 and up at the same daily rate.

The drive from southern New Hampshire to Portsmouth

From Derry or Manchester, most people take Route 101 east to I-95 north at Exit 2 in Hampton, then on into Portsmouth. It is the quickest route most of the year. A few things to know:

  • There is a toll at Exit 2. The Blue Star Turnpike has two plazas in Hampton: one on the main line and one for traffic entering or leaving at Exit 2 to Route 101. On our cars, automated tolls are tracked and billed at the end of the month.
  • Summer weekends are slow on 101. Saturday mornings eastbound and Sunday afternoons westbound fill with beach traffic, especially toward Hampton. Midweek is far easier.
  • Heading north from Portsmouth? The Spaulding Turnpike (Route 16) toward Dover and Rochester is also tolled.

Parking a rental car in downtown Portsmouth

Downtown parking is the one part of a Portsmouth stay that frustrates visitors. The short version:

  • Use the city garages for anything longer than an hour or two. The city runs two garages: the Hanover Garage at 34 Hanover Street, with around 900 spaces about a block from Market Square, and the Foundry Garage at 100 Foundry Place, with around 600.
  • Street meters are for short stops. They are priced to turn over quickly. Check the meter for its hours and the current rate before you walk away.
  • Ask your hotel or host. Many downtown stays include a space or a garage arrangement. Find out before you arrive so you are not circling at check-in.
  • Tickets are on the driver. Parking tickets during a rental are the renter’s responsibility, so it pays to read the signs.

Seacoast drives that make the rental worth it

  • Route 1A along the coast. South from Portsmouth through Rye toward Hampton, with ocean views most of the way. Go early on summer weekends.
  • Hampton Beach. A beach day is about half an hour from downtown. Our Hampton Beach day trip guide covers parking and timing.
  • Across the river. The bridges into Kittery put southern Maine within easy reach.
  • Inland for dinner. Exeter and Dover are short drives for an evening out.

Planning lots of driving? Our rentals usually come with a daily mileage allowance, and miles beyond it cost $0.50 to $1.50 or more each, depending on the vehicle. For a long Seacoast stay with plenty of day trips, tell us the plan and we can set up a custom mileage package.

Choosing the right car for the Seacoast

For a couple staying downtown, a compact or midsize sedan is the easy choice, especially for squeezing into older streets and garage spaces. A family with beach gear will want a midsize SUV. For a special occasion, such as an anniversary dinner on the water, our luxury cars suit Portsmouth well. See the fleet, and request a specific make and model when you book.

A car rental in Portsmouth, NH works best when it fits the trip: delivered to where you are staying or collected on your way through southern New Hampshire, the right size for the beach bags, and parked in a garage while you walk the town. Book online or call us and we will sort out the rest.
