Car Rental for College Graduation in NH: A Family Plan for Commencement Weekend

The ceremony is the easy part. It’s everything around it that needs a plan. Grandparents arrive on one flight and an aunt on another. Someone has to collect the graduate’s dorm room in a car that holds more than a backpack. Dinner is in Manchester, the hotel is in Bedford, and the ceremony starts at ten. If you’re working out a car rental for college graduation in NH this week, this is the logistics guide we’d hand a friend.

We’re a locally owned rental company in Derry with a second office in Manchester, and getting a whole family to a ceremony is exactly the kind of trip we plan around. Below are the ceremonies still ahead this month, how many cars a family really needs, and how to keep the day itself calm.

The short version: Book now, because SUVs and larger cars go first on big weekends. Plan one car per group that arrives separately, plus cargo space if there’s a move-out. Add the graduate as a driver if they’re 18 or older; we don’t charge a young-driver surcharge. Have the car delivered to your hotel instead of queuing at an airport counter. Questions? Call (603) 661-2672.

2026 commencement dates still ahead

Southern New Hampshire’s biggest graduation, SNHU’s spring commencement at SNHU Arena in Manchester, took place over the first weekend of May. Its fall ceremonies are scheduled for November 14 and 15. For everyone else, this is the busy stretch. These dates come from each school’s own announcements. Check with your graduate for times, tickets and any changes.

Why the car is worth booking before the restaurant

Every family with a graduate in the same class is booking the same weekend. Rooms near campus go first, then dinner reservations, then cars, and especially the larger ones. If you leave the car until you land, you may get whatever is left, and you’ll find out at a counter with tired grandparents in tow.

Booking with us early fixes a few things at once. You choose the class rather than taking what’s left. You can request a specific make and model, which we’ll match when availability allows. And the car can be waiting at your hotel. If plans change, cancellations 48 hours or more before pickup are fully refunded.

How many cars does your family need?

The common mistake is planning for the ceremony, when everyone is in one place, rather than for the rest of the weekend, when they aren’t. Count the separate journeys:

Rental car setups for families attending a college graduation in New Hampshire
Your group What usually works
Two parents, one graduate, no move-out One midsize sedan
Parents plus grandparents, arriving together One full-size sedan or SUV, with easy step-in height for older passengers
Two family groups on different flights Two cars. One shared car means someone waits at the airport for hours
Graduation plus dorm move-out A sedan for the ceremony and dinners, plus an SUV for the boxes

A second car also takes the pressure off the graduate, who usually has a ceremony call time hours before the family needs to be seated, and parties to get to afterward.

“Tell us who’s flying in, when, and whether there’s a dorm room to empty. We’ll suggest the cars and have them where you’re staying.” — Vorenza Rental Cars, 15 Central St, Unit B, Derry, NH

Parking and timing on the day

Commencement turns a quiet campus into a small city for a morning. A few habits make it painless:

  • Read the school’s parking and shuttle page the night before. Schools often move guest parking to outer lots and run shuttles on commencement day, and the details change year to year.
  • Drop off, then park. If anyone in the group has trouble walking, drop them at the door with a companion before you go and find a space.
  • Leave earlier than the map app says. Every family is aiming for the same entrance at the same time. Add generous slack, especially for an indoor ceremony with security lines.
  • Don’t hold your phone to navigate. New Hampshire’s hands-free law applies at red lights too. Mount it or let a passenger navigate. Our guide to New Hampshire driving laws for visitors covers the rest.
  • Plan the exit. Everyone leaves at once. Booking lunch a little away from campus, rather than the closest restaurant, often beats sitting in the parking lot.

Move-out and the drive home

For many families, graduation weekend is also move-out weekend. Four years of belongings rarely fit in a sedan with four adults in it. An SUV with the seats folded handles most dorm rooms, and splitting the weekend into a sedan for the ceremony and an SUV for the move is often easier than one oversized vehicle.

A few practical points for the move:

  • One-way trips are possible within New Hampshire. If you’re picking up in one town and finishing in another, call (603) 661-2672 to arrange it.
  • Returns can come to you. Bring the car back to our Derry or Manchester office, or schedule a pickup from your location.
  • Early flights are fine. Our standard hours are 8 AM to 6 PM every day, and after-hours pickup or return can be arranged in advance at no extra charge.
  • Staying in New Hampshire for a job? Graduates who aren’t ready to buy a car often bridge the gap with a monthly car rental. We rent to drivers 18 and up with no young-driver surcharge.

Flying in for a car rental for college graduation in NH

Most families flying in choose between Manchester-Boston Regional (MHT) and Boston Logan. MHT is the easy one for Saint Anselm, SNHU and anywhere around Manchester. Logan sometimes has cheaper fares but adds a drive up I-93 at the end of a travel day.

We don’t hand cars over at the MHT terminal, but our Manchester office on Candia Road is minutes from the airport. Many families take a short ride to their hotel and have the car delivered there instead. Our guide to getting from MHT or Logan to your rental walks through both options. If your flight lands late, tell us when you book and we’ll arrange an after-hours handover.

Your commencement weekend checklist

  1. Confirm your graduate’s ceremony time, venue and ticket count.
  2. Count the separate arrivals and journeys, and book one car per group.
  3. Add an SUV if there’s a dorm room to empty.
  4. Add every driver, including the graduate if they’ll drive, and have them at pickup.
  5. Choose hotel delivery or pickup in Manchester or Derry. Mention late arrivals.
  6. Read the school’s parking and shuttle guidance the night before.
  7. Save (603) 661-2672 for anything that changes.

A car rental for college graduation in NH should be the one thing you don’t think about all weekend. Pick the cars around the journeys, not the ceremony, have them waiting where you’re staying, and spend the day with the graduate. Book online, browse the fleet, or call us and we’ll help you plan it.
