Londonderry has the strangest geographic relationship with a rental car counter in southern New Hampshire. The town sits 8 to 12 minutes from MHT depending on which side you live on, close enough that the airport perimeter is shorter than the drive to the next town over. And yet most Londonderry residents who rent cars almost never use the MHT counter. The reason is the same reason this whole local-rental business exists: the airport-counter playbook is built for people who don't have a local option, and Londonderry residents very much do.
This is a short post by the standards of our blog because the math is simple. We deliver. You don't drive. The end.
Fast take: If you live in Londonderry, the entire question of "should I rent at MHT" is moot — we deliver to your driveway from our Derry office in about 8 minutes, with no airport facility fees, no concession surcharge, no credit-card-only deposit, no 21+ age rule. Same daily rate as a Manchester or Derry pickup. Same fleet. Same team.
What 8 minutes from MHT actually means
Drive times to MHT from various Londonderry corridors, in normal traffic:
- Northern Mammoth Road: 8 minutes — effectively the closest residential area to the airport in NH
- Pillsbury Road / Stonehenge Road: 10 minutes
- Hardy Road / Mountain Home Road: 11–12 minutes
- South Willow Street apartments (Manchester line): 6–8 minutes
- Page Road / Mack's Apples area: 10–12 minutes
The practical effect is that for most travel days, the airport drive is shorter than the drive to most other errands a Londonderry resident makes. Picking up at MHT instead of having a car delivered home would save no time and would add real cost.
Why the airport-counter math doesn't work for locals
The MHT rental counter is built around two assumptions: that you just stepped off a plane, and that you don't have any local options. Both of those are false for the average Londonderry resident, and the entire fee structure of an airport-counter rental falls apart once you factor that in:
- Airport concession fee. A percentage of the daily rate, often 10–14%, that the rental company passes through to fund their airport access. You don't need to pay it if you didn't pick up at the airport.
- Customer facility charge. A daily flat fee that funds the airport's rental car infrastructure. Same logic — if you skip the rental car center, you skip the fee.
- Premium-location surcharge. A daily uplift for the privilege of airport-counter pickup.
- Credit-card-only deposit. Standard at the airport counter; we accept debit cards instead.
- 21+ age requirement. Most chains; we welcome 18+.
- Counter wait. Not a fee per se but a real time cost — 15 to 30 minutes after a flight, even longer in summer peak.
For someone driving from a Londonderry house to MHT to pick up a chain rental, every one of those is a self-inflicted cost. The whole pitch of an airport-counter rental is "convenience for travelers who just landed." If you didn't just land, the convenience isn't there. The fees still are.
The delivery alternative, in 60 seconds
What it actually looks like to rent from us as a Londonderry resident:
- Reserve online or call. Browse our Londonderry rental options or call (603) 661-2672.
- Tell us your address. Mammoth Road, Pillsbury Road, Stonehenge Road, Hardy Road, an apartment on South Willow Street — all routine.
- We bring the car. From our Derry office in about 8 minutes. Standard delivery is included.
- Sign the agreement, take the keys, drive. Under five minutes at your driveway.
- When you're done, we pick the car up at the same address.
That's it. No counter line, no airport drive, no facility fees. Same fleet (economy through luxury) as our Manchester or Derry office customers, same daily rate.
Common Londonderry use cases
What we actually rent to Londonderry residents:
Personal car in the shop, need a temporary replacement. The most common single use case. Same-day delivery is routine; we drop a sedan in your driveway by lunch. Daily rate is the same whether you rent for one day or seven, so a Friday repair doesn't necessarily mean a weekend without a car.
MHT business traveler who doesn't want to leave the personal car at long-term parking. Sunday-night delivery, Friday-night pickup, total round-trip cost is often less than the equivalent days of long-term parking plus chain rental at the destination. Bedford business travelers do this too, slightly differently, since the math at MHT works out the same way.
Logan business traveler. Same logic but with a longer drive south. We deliver to Logan as well; the fee math still favors a local rental over Logan-counter pricing on multi-day trips.
Family ski weekend or fall foliage trip. Step up to an SUV with AWD, drop the personal sedan at home, take the rental north. Loon is about 80 minutes from Londonderry; the Lakes Region is about 70.
Apple-picking weekend visitors. Out-of-town family flying into MHT for a Mack's Apples weekend in late September or early October. We deliver curbside on arrival; they drive 10 minutes to your house or to the orchard.
Pinkerton Academy parent visits. Out-of-town family visiting Pinkerton from Londonderry-area lodging. More on the Pinkerton angle here.
Last-minute one-way work travel. Pick up Londonderry, drop in Manchester or Derry. One-way rentals between our two NH offices are routine.
The "leave your car at home" calculator
Here's the back-of-envelope decision tree we walk Londonderry business travelers through. For a four-day MHT trip:
Option A: Drive personal car, park at MHT long-term.
- 4 days × MHT long-term daily rate (varies; check current pricing)
- Plus rental at destination if you need a car when you land
- Plus any wear and tear / risk of leaving your car parked at the airport
Option B: Vorenza rents you a car at home, you drive it to MHT.
- 4 days × our daily rate (no long-term parking line)
- Optional curbside drop at MHT on departure morning
- We pick up the car at your home Friday night when you get back from your trip and rideshare home from MHT
Option B usually wins on multi-day trips, especially if your destination would charge airport-counter premium prices. Tell us your dates and we'll quote both honestly.
