Pet-Friendly Car Rental in New Hampshire: How to Rent a Car When the Dog Is Coming Too

Most people searching for a pet-friendly car rental in New Hampshire aren’t planning a vacation around the dog. Something else has happened. The car is in the shop the week of the long-planned trip north. The compact that works fine around Derry won’t take a 70-pound lab and a crate. Family is coming for the holidays with a dog in tow. Or you’re 20, you have a dog, and the airport counters won’t rent to you at all.

The questions are always the same. Will they let the dog in the car? What will it cost? What happens if there’s hair on the seats when I bring it back? This guide answers those plainly, from a locally owned rental company in Derry that welcomes pets. It also covers which car suits which dog, how to skip the rental counter, and the New Hampshire rules on parks, beaches and leaving a dog in a parked car that are worth knowing before you set off.

The short version: Pets are welcome in our rentals. Add the pet fee before the rental starts, either at online checkout or by calling us. Bringing a pet without it means a cleaning charge afterwards. Tell us the size of the dog when you book so we can line up the right car, and have it delivered to your door so the dog loads up at home. Questions? Call (603) 661-2672, 24/7.

Can you bring a dog in a rental car in New Hampshire?

Usually yes, but the rules vary a lot by company, and they’re easy to miss until a charge shows up on your card. Here is what the main options around southern New Hampshire say in their own published policies, as of October 2026:

Published pet policies of rental companies serving southern New Hampshire, October 2026
Rental option Pets allowed? The catch
Enterprise, National, Alamo Yes, crated Return the car free of pet hair or pay cleaning and detailing fees. No amount published (Enterprise policy)
Avis At most locations Call the pickup location to confirm. Cleaning fee of up to $450 for hair or odor (Avis policy)
Budget Yes, housebroken pets No pet fee, but charges for damage or special cleaning afterwards (Budget FAQ)
Turo (peer-to-peer) “Pet friendly” cars, or with the host’s written OK Pets must ride in a crate or carrier. Cleaning violation fee of up to $150 (Turo policy)
Vorenza Rental Cars Yes, with the pet fee Add the pet fee before the rental and the extra cleaning is covered. The amount is shown at checkout

The airport chains share two other limits. Their pet cleaning fees are charged after the rental, and they generally won’t rent to anyone under 21, with a daily surcharge under 25. Service animals are a separate case everywhere and are not treated as pets.

Whichever you pick, the question to ask is the same: is there a known price for bringing my dog, or will I find out afterwards?

How the pet fee works on a pet-friendly car rental in New Hampshire

Our policy is short, and it’s built so nobody gets a surprise:

  1. Add the pet fee before the rental starts. Select the pet option during online checkout. If you’ve already booked, call (603) 661-2672 and we’ll add it to your reservation.
  2. Tell us about the dog. Size, how many, and whether they travel in a crate. That helps us prepare a suitable vehicle rather than handing you whatever is next in line.
  3. The fee covers the extra cleaning. After a pet rental, the car gets the extra cleaning needed to make it allergen-free for the next renter. Every car in our fleet is also cleaned, sanitized and inspected between rentals as standard.
  4. Undisclosed pets mean a cleaning charge. If a pet rides along without the fee, a cleaning charge applies after the return. It’s the same cleaning either way. Paying for it up front is simply cheaper and more predictable.

The amount is shown at checkout before you pay, alongside any other add-on you choose, such as extra mileage or delivery. That’s what transparent pricing means to us: the extras are the ones you pick, and you see them before you commit.

Choosing the right rental car for your dog

Size the car around the dog and the crate first, then the people and the luggage. A car that’s fine for two adults can be miserable for two adults and a shepherd. Our fleet runs from economy cars through midsize and full-size sedans, SUVs and luxury vehicles:

Which rental car class suits which dog on a New Hampshire trip
Your dog and your trip Good fit Worth knowing
Small dog in a carrier, local trips Economy or compact sedan Belt the carrier into the back seat. Easy to park in Manchester or at a vet’s office
Medium dog, a weekend away Midsize sedan or compact SUV Back seat with a cover or hammock, or a small crate in an SUV’s cargo area
Large dog, or any dog that rides in a crate Midsize or full-size SUV The cargo area takes a crate and the floor is easier to clean. Measure the crate before you book
Two dogs, or dogs plus kids and luggage Full-size SUV Call first so we can tell you what’s actually available that week
A trip north in late fall or winter AWD SUV See our winter rental guide for when AWD earns its place
A fluffy dog sitting in the open cargo area of an SUV packed with a cooler and bags — sizing a dog-friendly rental car for a New Hampshire trip
A crate, a cooler and a weekend of gear all need to fit. Measure first, then pick the class.

A few details matter more with a dog than the badge on the car. A lower cargo floor is easier for an older dog to get into. Back doors that open wide make loading a crate much easier. If you have a preference, you can request a specific make and model when you book, and we’ll match it when availability allows. Browse the current fleet first, or call and describe the dog. We’ll suggest the right fit.

Get the car to the dog, not the dog to the counter

Picking up a rental with a dog is awkward. Either the dog waits in someone else’s car while you sort out paperwork, or it comes with you to a counter. Delivery avoids both. We bring the car to your home, you sign, and the dog loads up in your own driveway with its crate, bed and bowls.

We deliver door to door across our southern New Hampshire service area: Derry, Londonderry, Salem, Windham, Hampstead, Manchester, Bedford, Hooksett, Goffstown, Auburn and Candia. A local delivery fee based on distance and time is quoted when you book. Farther addresses, such as Nashua, Concord, Portsmouth or the Lakes Region, can be arranged at a higher rate based on distance. You can also pick up at our Derry office on Central Street or our Manchester office on Candia Road. Standard hours are 8 AM to 6 PM, seven days a week, and after-hours pickup and return can be arranged in advance at no extra charge. Need a car today because yours just failed? Flying in with a pet? We don’t hand cars over at the MHT terminal. If family is collecting you, have the rental delivered to their house so it’s waiting when you arrive. Our Manchester office is also minutes from the airport if you’d rather pick up. Our guide to getting from MHT or Logan to your rental covers the options in detail.

New Hampshire rules every dog owner should know before the drive

None of these are rental rules. They apply whether the car is yours or ours, and they’re the ones that catch out visitors and first-time trip planners. Rules change, so check the official page for each stop before you go.

  • Never leave the dog in a hot or cold parked car. Under New Hampshire law (RSA 644:8-aa), confining an animal in a vehicle where the temperature is high or low enough to cause it serious harm is animal cruelty. Police officers and humane-society agents can go into the car to rescue it. State parks go further: pets may not be left unattended at any time, including in a vehicle. A car in the sun at a trailhead heats up fast, even on a cool fall day.
  • State park beaches are off-limits all summer. New Hampshire State Parks bans pets from beaches, swim areas and picnic areas from May 1 to September 30. Elsewhere in the parks, dogs must be on a leash no longer than six feet. Off-season is a different story. From October 1 to April 30, dogs are allowed on the sand at Hampton Beach State Park, which makes October a good month for a Seacoast day with the dog.
  • Some parks never allow pets. Monadnock State Park, the main approach to Mount Monadnock, bans pets year-round. So do North Hampton State Beach and Odiorne Point State Park in Rye. In Franconia Notch, dogs are allowed on the hiking trails but not in the Flume Gorge.
  • The White Mountain National Forest welcomes dogs, with leash rules. According to the forest’s own FAQ, dogs must be leashed in developed recreation areas, including campgrounds, picnic areas, trailhead parking lots and developed trails. Further out on the trails, a dog under strict voice command may be off leash.
  • Restrain the dog in the car. No New Hampshire law says how a dog must ride inside a car, but a crate, a carrier belted into the seat or a crash-tested harness keeps it off your lap and out of the footwell. It also protects the dog if you have to brake hard on I-93.

Planning a dog-friendly day out from Derry

October is one of the best months of the year to have a dog in New Hampshire: cooler days, fewer bugs, and trails covered in leaves. Three things about the rental itself shape where you can go.

  • Paved roads only. Our vehicles are for paved-road use, and off-road use is prohibited. Some trailheads sit at the end of unpaved forest roads. Pick trailheads you can reach on pavement, and if you’re unsure about a particular road, call us before you plan around it.
  • Mileage adds up on a trip north. Most rentals include a daily mileage allowance, with extra miles at $0.50 to $1.50 or more per mile depending on the vehicle. A round trip from Derry to the White Mountains can use up a day’s allowance quickly. Tell us the plan when you book and we can set up a custom mileage package. Our fall foliage rental guide covers this in detail for October drives.
  • Tolls are billed later. If your route takes you through the toll plazas on I-93 or the Everett Turnpike, automated tolls are tracked and billed at the end of the month.

For route ideas, from the Kancamagus Highway to the Seacoast, see our weekend road trips from Derry. Then check the dog rules for each stop. Mount Monadnock is the classic day hike from southern New Hampshire, but the state park that holds its main trails doesn’t allow pets, so plan a dog-friendly hike somewhere else.

Bringing the car back: hair, mud and the rest

With the pet fee on your booking, you don’t need to detail the car yourself. The extra cleaning is what the fee pays for. A few habits still make the trip easier and keep the car in good shape:

  • Cover the seats. A seat cover, hammock or old blanket catches most of the hair and mud. Ask when you book whether we can provide anything for your trip.
  • Keep a towel by the door. Wet paws after a lake or a muddy trail go on the towel, not the upholstery.
  • Watch for chewing and scratching. The pet fee covers cleaning, not damage. A crate is the simplest protection for a nervous traveller.
  • No smoking or vaping, ever. That rule applies in every one of our vehicles, with or without a pet.
  • Return with the same fuel level you picked up with, and let us know about anything unusual at the handoff.

If something goes wrong on the road, like a warning light, a flat or a dog that’s been sick on a long drive, call us at (603) 661-2672. We answer 24/7 and will arrange roadside help or a replacement vehicle. Don’t attempt repairs yourself.

Your pet-friendly rental checklist

  1. Add the pet option at checkout, or call to add it to an existing booking.
  2. Tell us about the dog: size, how many, and whether there’s a crate (with its measurements).
  3. Choose delivery or pickup. Delivery to your door, or pickup in Derry or Manchester.
  4. Mention the big drives so the mileage allowance fits the trip.
  5. Pack for the dog: leash, water and bowl, towel, seat cover, waste bags, and the vaccination record if you’re boarding or staying somewhere that asks.
  6. Check the rules at each stop before you leave, not at the gate.
  7. Save (603) 661-2672 for 24/7 support.

A pet-friendly car rental in New Hampshire should be no harder than any other rental. Add the pet fee up front, tell us who’s coming, pick a car with room for the crate, and spend the day on the trail instead of worrying about the back seat.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes. Pets are welcome in Vorenza rentals as long as the pet fee is added before the rental starts. You can select the pet option during online checkout, or call (603) 661-2672 to add it to a reservation you have already made. The fee pays for the extra cleaning that keeps the car allergen-free for the next renter. Tell us about the dog when you book so we can prepare a suitable vehicle.
A cleaning charge is applied when the car comes back. Hair, odor and dander are hard to hide from the next renter, and some of them have allergies, so the car has to be properly cleaned either way. Adding the pet fee in advance is the simpler and cheaper route, and the amount is shown at checkout before you pay.
For a large dog, or any dog that travels in a crate, a midsize or full-size SUV is usually the right choice. The cargo area takes a crate, the floor is easier to clean than a seat, and an SUV handles a fall or winter trip north better than a small sedan. Small dogs in a carrier ride comfortably in an economy or midsize sedan. Mention the size of the dog and the crate when you book, and you can request a specific make and model, which we accommodate when availability allows.
Yes, at Vorenza. We rent to drivers 18 and older with a valid license and no young-driver surcharge, and the pet policy is the same for every renter. Most national chains require renters to be 21 or older and add a daily fee under 25. Deposits start at 250 dollars on a credit card and 300 dollars on a debit card.
Avoid it. Under New Hampshire law, RSA 644:8-aa, confining an animal in a vehicle where the temperature is high or low enough to cause it serious harm is animal cruelty, and police officers and humane-society agents may enter the vehicle to rescue it. New Hampshire State Parks also prohibit leaving pets unattended at any time, including in a vehicle. A car parked in the sun at a trailhead can get dangerously hot even on a cool fall day, so plan stops where the dog can come with you.
