The packing list arrived months ago. The name labels are sewn in. What nobody mentions in the camp handbook is the drive. Summer camp drop-off in New Hampshire usually means a lakeside or mountain campus an hour or more from the nearest airport, a check-in window you are expected to hit, and a footlocker that will not fit in the trunk of a compact. If you are flying in from out of state, you also need a car that is waiting when you land.
We are a locally owned rental company in Derry, and late June is when the camp calls start. This guide is the plan we walk parents through: where to land, which car swallows a trunk and two duffels, how to time the drive north, and what to sort out now for pickup day weeks from now.
The short version: Fly into Manchester (MHT) or Boston Logan, collect the car from our Manchester office or have it brought to your hotel, and pick an SUV if there is a trunk involved. Leave earlier than the map says on arrival day, and book the pickup weekend at the same time as the drop-off. Questions? Call (603) 661-2672, 24/7.
Why summer camp drop-off in New Hampshire is really a car problem
New Hampshire has a long overnight-camp tradition. The New Hampshire Camp Directors Association counts more than 100 member camps, and many of the best known sit on lakes in the Lakes Region or in the valleys of the White Mountains. That geography is the point of camp, and it is also why nothing but a car gets you there. There is no train, rideshare is thin once you leave the I-93 corridor, and a taxi from the airport for a two-hour round trip plus luggage is a hard sell.
The second problem is volume. A first-time camper going for a full session can arrive with a trunk, a duffel, a sleeping bag, a pillow, a fan and a bag of last-minute things from the pharmacy. Add a parent or two and maybe a younger sibling who wants to see the cabin, and a midsize sedan is suddenly full before the trunk is in.
Flying in: Manchester or Logan, then the car
For most camp families, Manchester-Boston Regional Airport (MHT) is the easier landing. It is already north of Boston traffic and sits right on the way up I-93. Logan often has more flights and better fares, but adds the drive through or around the city before the real trip starts.
Here is how the car part works with us:
- No terminal handover, but close by. We do not hand cars over at the MHT terminal. Our Manchester office at 1086 Candia Rd is minutes from the airport, and a short ride gets you there.
- Hotel delivery. Staying the night before drop-off? We deliver to hotels across our service area, including Manchester, Bedford, Londonderry and Derry, with the delivery fee quoted when you book.
- Late flights. Standard hours are 8 AM to 6 PM, seven days a week. After-hours pickup can be arranged in advance at no extra charge, so a 9 PM landing is not a problem if you tell us ahead of time.
Our guide to airport arrivals at MHT and Logan covers the options in more detail.
Which rental car fits a camper, a trunk and a sibling
Size the car around the trunk first. A sedan trunk can look big and still have an opening too narrow for a footlocker. Measure it at home before you book.
| Your drop-off | Good fit | Why |
|---|---|---|
| One camper, duffel bags only | Midsize or full-size sedan | Soft bags squeeze in, and the fuel bill is lower on a long round trip |
| One camper with a trunk | Midsize SUV | The trunk slides flat into the cargo area with room for bedding on top |
| Two campers, or a camper plus siblings | Full-size SUV | Two trunks and five people is a full-size job. Call so we can check what is available |
| Pickup day | SUV | Everything comes home damp, muddy and bigger than it left |
Not sure where the line is? Our SUV vs. sedan guide walks through it. You can also browse the fleet or request a specific make and model when you book, which we match when availability allows.
