Fourth of July in New Hampshire: A Road Trip Plan for the 250th Holiday Weekend

This one is bigger than usual. Saturday marks 250 years since the Declaration of Independence, and the Fourth of July in New Hampshire is shaping up to match: parades, cookouts, a long weekend for many workers, and fireworks spread over two nights. For a lot of households in southern New Hampshire it also means a full house. The cousins are flying in, the grandparents are driving up, and suddenly there are nine people and two cars.

We rent cars out of Derry, so this is the week our phone gets busy. This guide puts the weekend in order: which nights the fireworks fall on, how to plan the drive home afterwards, and how to get enough seats for everyone without spending the holiday at a rental counter.

The short version: July 4 is a Saturday, so the federal holiday is Friday, July 3. Manchester and Portsmouth hold their fireworks on Friday. Derry, Salem, Concord and Hampton Beach go on Saturday. If you need an extra car, book it now or call (603) 661-2672. We deliver across southern New Hampshire.

How the 2026 holiday weekend falls

  • Friday, July 3: the observed federal holiday. Banks and many offices close, and the getaway traffic starts Thursday evening rather than Friday.
  • Saturday, July 4: Independence Day itself, with most town parades and the largest share of fireworks.
  • Sunday, July 5: the most common rain date, and the heavy southbound day as visitors head home.

That shape helps. With shows split across Friday and Saturday, you can catch two in one weekend, one close to home and one at the beach or the lake.

Holiday traffic: when to drive, and how to get home after the show

Holiday weekend traffic in New Hampshire follows a predictable pattern. Plan around it and the weekend gets much easier:

  • Thursday evening and Friday morning tend to be the heavy northbound windows on I-93 toward the lakes and mountains. Route 101 east toward the Seacoast fills on Saturday morning. Check New England 511 for crashes and lane closures on the morning you travel.
  • Beach parking fills early. On a hot July 4, Hampton Beach lots and metered spaces can be full by late morning. If your plan is a beach day and the fireworks, arrive early and stay put. Our Hampton Beach day trip guide covers parking and the route via Route 101.
  • After the finale, everyone leaves at once. Park facing the way out, a few blocks from the launch site. Either slip away before the last burst or settle in for thirty to forty-five minutes while the first wave clears.
  • Set a meeting point. Phones can be slow in a big crowd. Agree where everyone meets before the show starts.
  • Pick a sober driver before the cookout begins, not after.
  • Tolls are billed later. If the weekend takes you through the Hooksett plaza on I-93 or the Hampton plazas on I-95, automated tolls on our cars are tracked and billed at the end of the month.

Enough seats for everyone, without the counter

The most common call we get this week is simple: more people are coming than the household cars can carry. A rental for the long weekend solves the parade, the beach, the fireworks and the airport run in one go. A few things to know:

  • Delivery to your door. We deliver across our local service area: Derry, Londonderry, Salem, Windham, Hampstead, Manchester, Bedford, Hooksett, Goffstown, Auburn and Candia, with the fee quoted when you book.
  • Pick the class for the group. A full-size SUV carries a big family and a cooler. A midsize sedan is cheaper on fuel for a couple doing their own thing. See the fleet.
  • Young drivers are welcome. We rent to drivers 18 and older with no young-driver surcharge, so a college student home for the summer can take the car to the beach with friends.
  • Plans can change. Cancel 48 or more hours before pickup for a full refund. Between 24 and 48 hours, a partial refund applies.
  • Need it today? If something has just fallen through, read how same-day car rental works, then call. We will tell you honestly what is free.

Your Fourth of July checklist

  1. Count the seats for every leg: airport, parade, beach, fireworks.
  2. Book the extra car at vorenzarentals.com/book or by phone.
  3. Pick your fireworks night, Friday or Saturday, and check the town’s page that afternoon.
  4. Leave early for anything at the beach or the lake.
  5. Agree a meeting point and a sober driver.
  6. Save (603) 661-2672 for flats, warning lights or a change of plan. We answer 24/7.

The Fourth of July in New Hampshire is a good one this year: a long weekend, two nights of fireworks and the country’s 250th birthday. Sort out the seats now, leave a little earlier than feels necessary, and enjoy the show.
