Lake Winnipesaukee Car Rental: How to Get a Car for Your Week at the Lake

The cottage is booked. Maybe it is the same camp your family has rented for years, or a first-time find with a dock and a screen porch. Either way, the week runs on wheels. Groceries are in Meredith or Wolfeboro, the beach is across the bay, the ice cream is in another town, and the lake is too big to cover on foot. A Lake Winnipesaukee car rental is less about the drive up and more about everything you do once you are there.

This guide is for families planning a lake week. It covers how to get a car to the lake, which of the three main routes to take, how to get around the shoreline once you arrive, and the cottage-road and mileage details that catch people out. If you only have a weekend, our weekend road trips from Derry include a shorter Lakes Region loop.

The short version: Pick up in Derry or Manchester, or have the car brought to you in southern New Hampshire, and drive north. Delivery straight to the lake is possible at an out-of-area rate. Choose an SUV if you are hauling coolers and beach gear, mention the length of your stay so the mileage fits, and check that the cottage road is paved. Call (603) 661-2672 with questions, 24/7.

Three routes from southern New Hampshire to the lake

Lake Winnipesaukee has three natural approaches from the south. Which one you use depends on which shore your cottage is on.

  • To Weirs Beach and Laconia: I-93 to Exit 20. From Tilton, follow US Route 3 north through Laconia toward Weirs Beach. This is the most direct way to the western shore, and the route the Mount Washington cruise crowd takes to its summer home port on the Weirs boardwalk. Expect about an hour from Manchester and an hour and a quarter from Derry in normal traffic.
  • To Meredith and Center Harbor: I-93 to Exit 23. Route 104 runs east from New Hampton to meet Route 3 in Meredith. It is a quieter road into the northwest corner of the lake.
  • To Alton Bay and Wolfeboro: Route 28. Here Derry has a quiet advantage. Route 28 runs north from Derry through Manchester, Hooksett, Epsom, Pittsfield and Barnstead to Alton at the southern tip of the lake, then on to Wolfeboro. No interstate at all. If your cottage is on the eastern shore, this is often the easier drive.

One timing note: summer Friday afternoons northbound and Sunday evenings southbound are the slow windows on I-93. Leave Saturday morning or late Friday evening if you can. If your route crosses the toll plaza in Hooksett on I-93, automated tolls are tracked and billed at the end of the month.

“Tell us how long you will be at the lake and how far you plan to roam. We will set the mileage to match before you leave.” — Vorenza Rental Cars, 15 Central St, Unit B, Derry, NH

Getting around the lake once you are there

Winnipesaukee’s shoreline is long and full of bays, so towns that look close on the map can be a fair drive apart. Over a week, most families end up visiting several of these:

  • Weirs Beach (Laconia). The boardwalk, the arcades and the main summer departures of the M/S Mount Washington. Parking near the boardwalk fills on warm weekends, so arrive early or plan a weekday visit.
  • Meredith. The town docks and lakeside boardwalk at the head of Meredith Bay, plus the shops and restaurants that make it an easy evening out.
  • Wolfeboro. A walkable downtown on the eastern shore with a busy town dock. On a cottage week it is often the grocery and dinner town for the east side.
  • Ellacoya State Park (Gilford). A 600-foot sandy beach on the southwest shore with views across to the mountains. Parking is limited on nice weekends, and the state recommends reserving day-use parking before you go. Pets are not permitted in the park.
  • Alton Bay and Center Harbor. Smaller stops at the southern tip and northern end of the lake, good for a quiet afternoon.

Choosing the right car for a lake week

A lake week has different luggage from a city trip: coolers, beach chairs, life jackets, a grocery run for six, sometimes a paddleboard on top of all that. A few rules of thumb:

  • Two people, light packers: a midsize sedan handles the drive and the town runs comfortably.
  • A family of four with beach gear: a midsize SUV. The cargo area swallows the cooler and the chairs, and the higher seat is easier on narrow lake roads.
  • Two families sharing a cottage: two cars beat one big one. The early risers can go to the beach while the others sleep in.
  • An anniversary week: something from our luxury range makes the evening drives along the shore feel like part of the trip.

Our SUV vs. sedan guide goes deeper, and you can browse the current fleet and request a specific make and model when you book.

Cottage roads, mileage and towing: three things to check

  1. Is the cottage road paved? Our cars are for paved roads only. Plenty of lake cottages sit on short private lanes that are gravel. If yours does, call us before you book and we will confirm whether the trip works.
  2. How many miles will the week take? Most rentals include a daily mileage allowance, with extra miles charged at $0.50 to $1.50 or more per mile depending on the vehicle. A round trip from Derry to the lake plus a week of shoreline errands adds up. Tell us the plan and we can build a custom mileage package.
  3. Are you towing anything? Do not assume a rental can tow a boat or trailer. Call (603) 661-2672 before you book and we will confirm.

If something goes wrong at the lake, like a flat on a back road or a warning light, call us 24/7. We will arrange roadside help or a replacement vehicle. Don’t attempt repairs yourself.

A Lake Winnipesaukee car rental works best when it is planned around the week, not just the drive: the right size for the gear, mileage that matches the plans, and a road to the cottage the car is allowed on. Sort those three and the rest of the week is docks and sunsets.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes. The Lakes Region is outside our local delivery zone, so delivery there is available at a higher rate based on distance, quoted when you book. Many renters save that fee by picking up at our Derry or Manchester office, or by having the car delivered to a home or hotel in southern New Hampshire before they drive north.
In normal traffic, Weirs Beach is roughly an hour from Manchester and about an hour and a quarter from Derry by I-93 and Route 3. Wolfeboro, on the eastern shore, is a similar drive from Derry straight up Route 28. Summer Friday afternoons and Sunday evenings add time in both directions.
Our rentals are for paved roads only, and off-road use is prohibited. Some lake cottages sit on private gravel lanes. If the directions to your cottage include an unpaved road, call (603) 661-2672 before you book and we will confirm whether the trip works.
Do not assume it. Towing is not something to plan around without checking first. Call (603) 661-2672 before you book and we will confirm what is and is not allowed for the vehicle you are considering.
