The packing pile in the spare room has stopped being a pile and started being a problem. There’s the comforter still in its bag, three storage bins, a fan, a mini fridge, a lamp, and a winter coat that has to go now because nobody is driving back in November. The family car is a compact. That’s the moment most parents start looking for a college move-in car rental in NH, and with move-in at New Hampshire’s big campuses only days away, the timing matters.
This guide is for two kinds of families. The first is local and simply needs more cargo space than the household car has. The second is flying in from out of state and needs a car from the airport to the residence hall. We’re a rental company with offices in Manchester and Derry, so we know how quickly the end of August comes round.
The short version: Book an SUV now for a first-year load. Move-in dates are fixed and the larger cars go first. Match the pickup to your assigned timeslot, not the other way round. Students 18 and older can rent in their own name, and parents can be added as drivers. Questions? Call (603) 661-2672.
Move-in is close: the 2026 dates to plan around
Many campuses assign each student a move-in day and an arrival window, then email the details over the summer. Two of the largest have published their fall 2026 schedules:
- University of New Hampshire (Durham). First-year students move into the residence halls on Thursday, August 27 and Friday, August 28, from 8 AM to 4 PM, with each building or floor assigned a day. Returning students move in on Saturday, August 29. Details are on UNH Housing’s move-in page.
- Southern New Hampshire University (Manchester). New students move in on August 28 and returning students on August 30. SNHU asks students to arrive at their assigned date and time and no earlier, and sends the specific times by email.
Saint Anselm, Plymouth State, Keene State and other campuses publish their own schedules. Check your student’s housing portal for the exact day and window before you book the car. Then book the car to match.
How much car does a dorm move-in need?
Size the car for the bulkiest single item first, usually the fridge or a storage tower, then for the number of people riding along. Our fleet runs from economy cars through midsize and full-size sedans, SUVs and luxury vehicles.
| The load | Good fit | Worth knowing |
|---|---|---|
| Returning student: suitcases, a few boxes, bedding | Midsize or full-size sedan | Fine if the bulky items stayed on campus or in storage |
| First-year: bins, mini fridge, fan, lamp, two seasons of clothes | Midsize or full-size SUV | Fold the rear seats and the fridge goes in flat. Two parents can still ride up front |
| Two students, or a sibling moving the same weekend | Full-size SUV, or two cars | Call us. Two mid-size cars can beat one packed SUV |
| Off-campus apartment with furniture | A moving truck | A bed frame or sofa needs a truck. Rent our car for the people and the boxes |
Two packing tips that save a second trip. Soft bags and collapsible bins fill gaps around rigid boxes. And measure the fridge: SNHU, for example, caps refrigerators at 3.5 cubic feet, so check the limit on your school’s packing list before you buy and pack one. Our SUV vs. sedan guide goes deeper on cargo space.
